MODULE EVALUATION-Digital Design Production

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN – END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION
Module Code – OUGD202 Module Title digital design production
Level 02 Semester 01

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
i have developed my digital skills vastly through this module. i have learned how to use after effects with a lot more confidence, i have learned ways in which i can move characters on screen in animations. i have created my animation with a very basic understanding of the software, however i found that when it came to my further development stages of my final piece the work i had produced before was a lot easier to change and adjust. therefore in the future when using this software i will be able to experiment with more things such as paths/3d paths which open a wide range of other possibilities and opportunities.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
i have also developed a better knowledge of how to use file formats appropriately when using digital media. this was mainly learned when i was putting work on to my iweb. i think i applied this well as the overall size of my i web was 57MB this helped it to be faster when you look though it. compressing done all the files made the i web part take longer, however it didn't cause me trouble when transferring it to disc.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
i think that my story boards worked well along side my animations, i would say this was a strength in my project as i got them as accurate as possible. i did this by sticking to the original story board ideas as much as possible. having detailed story boards on paper before working digitally i found was a strength as it saved me thinking and experimenting with further ideas when it came to working in After Effects.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
i found that spent to much time on development and research stages of my project, i could have started the After effects side of it a bit earlier, if i started it a week earlier i would have had a more finished idea for my animation and iweb for my final crit which was a week before the deadline. this would have given me four to five days on improving the final sequence and possibly  developing the layout and other aspects of my i web.

5. Identify  things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

i will do the development and research parts of my projects more quicker, rather than putting a lot of detail in this area i will do whats necessary and then perfect design sheets etc later down the line of the project. this will give me more time to focus on the practice sides of the project which will enable me to produce a more developed and informed final piece.

i will spent more time on software such as i web, i will treat it like a blog, therefore i will have a basic structure and will be developing it as i go along rather then saving it to do last. even though i had designed it out all on paper first it still proved to be very time consuming.

i will produce a time table at the beginning of the project which will section of the amount of time which i can spend on each part of the project from research right up to the deadline.  this will help me not to spend more time on certain aspects of my work.

i will research into wed design and layout outs of existing websites and how they link there pages. i did do this for research, however i didn't really research into it as much as i could, i will do this on my blog which will inform my design decisions in future when designing websites.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)
5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance 5
Punctuality 4
Motivation 5
Commitment 4
Quantity of work produced 4
Quality of work produced 4
Contribution to the group 4

I web- Title ideas

here are some ideas for the way i will be laying out my I web. i have looked at some type which i will be using,i have thumb nailed some ideas for the title page.

DEVELOPMENT-background and order

i have started to look at the style of background which i can have at the beginning of my sequence. i have decided to use parts of never never land, as it will fit in well with the Mr Smee character. this is a mock up of my background, the real one will be in colour, however i will change the opacity of it to make it look like it is further away in comparison to the foreground. i will also have a crocodile in front of the ship (peter pan)

i have changed the background for the Cheshire cat character so it looks more like his scene in Alice in wonderland, i could also have his grin(teeth) as separate layers in the background, fading in and out.

when the countdown gets to 10 the eye will zoom out to the title image of the Cheshire cat. then vanish (spin off)

DEVELOPMENT-1st FINISHED sequence

this is my first finished sequence, it is still work in progress. i have made it to fit my storyboard ideas as much as possible.

after evaluating it i have decided to add a background to beginning part, change the the number sequence to go before the Cheshire cat title. this is so its not to confusing and the majority of title sequences have the title of the program or film at the end.

DEVELOPMENT-cheshire cat

DEVELOPMENT- 1st part

DEVELOPMENT-Mr Smee boat

DEVELOPMENT-Mr Smee walking

this my attempt in making this character move i have made each part of his body a separate layer. the first attempt helped me alot with timing issues. it gave me a better understanding of what will be doable and look good in 50 seconds. therefore i have decided to take away the Genie/Dopey part of my sequence. this will give me more time on sequencing Mr Smee and Cheshire cat and at the same time not give to much away about the top ten.

this is a more developed version of Mr Smee walking
